The Golem: An Ancient AI Myth? #

The Golem is a figure of Jewish folklore, an artificial being brought to life from inanimate matter like clay through mystical rituals, often involving the inscription of Hebrew letters. It is an early conception of artificial intelligence, a man-made creation imbued with life by manipulating code.

How was a Golem Created? #

The process was shrouded in mysticism and varied depending on the tale. However, the core idea revolved around manipulating the Hebrew alphabet based on a mystical text, the Sefer Yetzirah (“Book of Creation”). This book described how God created the world through language, combining letters according to divine formulas, for example the Hebrew word for “name,” often referring to the divine name, would be written on a piece of paper and placed in the Golem’s mouth or on its forehead. This inscription acted as the activating force, bringing the Golem to life. In some tellings, changing an inscribed code on the Golem from truth to death could deactivate it.

The Golem’s Purpose and Downfall #

Golems were typically created for protection or to perform tasks. The most famous Golem story involves Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel of Prague, who created a Golem to defend the Jewish community from attacks. Golem stories often carry a cautionary message. The Golem, powerful but lacking true consciousness or free will, could become uncontrollable and dangerous. Rabbi Loew’s Golem, for example, is said to have gone on a rampage, forcing the rabbi to deactivate it.

Echoes in Other Cultures #

The concept of artificially created beings is not unique to Jewish folklore. Ancient Greeks had myths of automatons, like the bronze giant Talos, brought to life by the gods. In Chinese mythology, stories abound of terra-cotta armies animated to serve their creators in the afterlife.
